An assistant for customer service
It answers customer questions from your help pages and policies, or drafts a reply for your team to check. You pick which, topic by topic. The hard ones go to your support team.
AI assistants and chatbots
Stop typing the same answers. We build an AI assistant that answers your customers and staff from your own documents. The hard questions still go to a person.
Start with Gnar Discovery and Design: two to six weeks of planning, from $15,000. You leave with a fixed price to build your assistant. If building it costs more, we pay.
AI chatbot development means building an assistant that answers questions from your company’s own documents, not the internet. Here is an example. An employee asks how vacation days carry over. The assistant answers from your HR policy and shows where the answer came from. If the policy doesn’t cover it, the question goes to HR. The Gnar Company builds these for customer service and for HR and IT teams.

What changes
It answers from your policies, guides and wikis, and shows where each answer came from.
Your team checks a draft and sends it, instead of starting from a blank page.
Questions that need judgment, or that your documents can’t answer, go to the right person on your team.
Each person only gets answers from documents they already have permission to open. The assistant keeps a record of what it read.
Two ways in
Two kinds of assistant. You pick which one to build first.
It answers customer questions from your help pages and policies, or drafts a reply for your team to check. You pick which, topic by topic. The hard ones go to your support team.
It answers HR and IT questions from your own documents, using only files the person asking may open. What it can’t answer goes to HR or IT.

How it works
First we find the questions people ask today and the documents that answer them. Then we build it, put it where your team already works, and hand it over.
We read the questions your customers or staff ask today. We find the documents that answer them. We agree which ones always go to a person. At the end, you know the build price, and it is fixed.
We build the assistant on your documents and set it up in the tools your team already uses. Our triple guarantee covers it. Fixed price, and if we go over, we pay. It does what the contract says, or we fix it. Twelve‑month bug-free warranty.
We hand it over, documented and tested. Or we run it for you. The twelve‑month warranty covers it either way.
Common questions
Still have questions?
The Gnar Company does. It is a custom software firm in Needham, Massachusetts. Gnar builds AI chatbots for customer service and AI assistants for staff. Each one answers from your own documents, shows its source, and sends hard questions to a person. Senior engineers in the US do the work. Gnar has delivered more than 100 projects. Each build has a fixed price, works as specified or Gnar fixes it, and carries a twelve-month bug-free warranty.
Yes. Gnar builds customer service assistants that answer from your help pages and policies, not from the internet. Each answer shows where it came from. The assistant answers routine questions on its own, or drafts the reply for your team to check. Anything it can’t answer goes to a person on your support team. Discovery starts by reading the questions your customers ask today.
Yes. An assistant built by Gnar answers HR and IT questions from the policies you already keep. For example, how PTO carries over, or how to reset a VPN. It shows which document each answer came from. It uses the file permissions you already have. No one gets an answer from a file they can’t open. Not in your documents? Then the question goes straight to someone in HR or IT.
It sends the question to a person. Gnar builds the assistant to answer only from your own documents. When they don’t cover a question, it goes to someone on your team. In Discovery, you and Gnar decide which topics always go to a person, and who gets them.
Either one, or both. You decide topic by topic in Discovery. Mike Stone, Gnar’s co-founder, uses one test: is it okay if the AI isn’t right a hundred percent? A refund outside your policy is a no, so a person handles it. A routine reply can be a yes. Then the assistant sends it on its own, or drafts it for someone on your support team to check first.
Sometimes, and Gnar will say so. Intercom Fin and Zendesk charge about $1 to $2 each time their bot settles a question alone. If your questions are support questions and the answers sit in your help center, buy the tool. Build when your staff ask the questions, or the answers live in your own systems. Build when some staff may see files that others may not. Mike Stone covers what to weigh first in 5 Questions to Ask Before Investing in AI.
Usually, yes. In Discovery, Gnar lists every tool the assistant must reach, before the build price is fixed. The assistant only gets access to what it needs, and it keeps a log of every document it opens. Setting it up is part of the fixed price for the build.
Claude, by default. Claude is Anthropic’s AI, and Gnar’s engineers build with it. Anthropic lists The Gnar Company as a Claude Select Services Partner. The assistant is still built to answer only from your documents, and only from files the person asking may open.
All three parts cover an assistant Gnar builds. One: a fixed price, and if the build costs more, Gnar pays. Two: a guaranteed outcome, meaning the software works as specified or we fix it. Three: a twelve-month bug-free warranty. “As specified” means what the contract says the assistant must do.
Your team, or Gnar. You get it documented and tested, so your own people can take it over. Prefer not to? Gnar keeps it running after launch.
Gnar’s builds usually cost $150,000 to $300,000 or more. That range is for all the software Gnar builds, not just assistants. Your assistant’s own fixed price comes out of Discovery, before you commit. Discovery has three published options: two weeks for $15,000, four weeks for $20,000, or six weeks for $30,000.
With Gnar Discovery and Design. It takes two to six weeks. Gnar maps the questions people ask, the documents that answer them, and the tools the assistant must reach. It ends with a fixed build price. Not sure AI is the right move yet? Gnar’s AI Strategy & Fluency work finds where AI pays off first.
