Turn your idea into a plan
You know what the business needs. You may not know how to build it. We talk to your users, write down what the software must do, build a prototype and price the build.
For companies planning new software
Know what your software will cost before you build it. In two to six weeks, our designers and engineers turn your idea into a clickable prototype and a build plan with one fixed price. If we build it and it costs more than planned, we pay the difference.
Discovery starts at $15,000, after a free call with Pete Whiting, our Head of Sales. Building the software is a separate cost, typically $150,000 to $300,000 or more.
Product discovery is the planning done before anyone writes code. At The Gnar Company, senior U.S.‑based designers and engineers interview your users, spell out what the software must do and plan how it will be built. You keep everything discovery makes. Discovery has its own fixed price. The three guarantees below cover the build.
Fixed milestone price
Any overage on us
Guaranteed outcome
The software works as specified or we fix it
Twelve-month bug-free warranty
Three commitments on every build engagement
What you get
A product requirements document: your goals, what the software must do, who will use it and what it will not do. Any team can build from it.
The engineers who would build it plan how. They pick the languages and tools, plan how the software stores its information and map how it connects to the systems you already use.
You and your team try the main tasks in the prototype before the software is built. Mistakes show up while they are cheap to fix.
One price covers the whole build, paid in stages called milestones. If Gnar builds it and the planned work costs more, Gnar pays the difference. If you and Gnar agree a small change fits the plan, it is included. New work beyond the plan gets its own price.
Two ways in
Bring your notes or a full written plan of what the software must do.

Already wrote down what you need? If Gnar’s engineers find it complete, Gnar can price the build from it directly. If it needs work, we check it, fix what is unclear and fill the gaps, then price it.
Proof
Discovery first, then the build
A plan for a system never built before

Scoped and ranked first, then built

How it works
Three tiers. Each follows these steps and ends with a full build plan.
Foundation: 2 weeks, $15,000, up to 2 user interviews and 1 prototype.
Core: 4 weeks, $20,000, up to 4 interviews and 2 prototypes. Most clients pick Core.
Accelerator: 6 weeks, $30,000, up to 6 interviews and 4 prototypes.
Each prototype has up to 4 screens. Not sure which tier? The proposal after your call with Pete names the one that fits.
We interview your users and the other people the software affects. What they say becomes the written requirements.
Designers build a prototype of the main screens, and your team tries it. Engineers plan how it will be built and how it stores its information.
We rank the work with you, so costly parts that add little can wait for a later version. Then Gnar puts one fixed price on the plan.
Common questions
Still have questions?
Product discovery services figure out what to build and what it will cost before any code is written. At The Gnar Company, product discovery means senior designers and engineers interview the people who will use the software, list what it must do and build a prototype you can click. It ends with a build plan and one fixed price for the whole build. You pay it in stages.
A discovery phase should give you everything a team needs to start building. Gnar’s product discovery starts with interviews with your users and gives you a written list of what the software must do, called a product requirements document. You also get designs of the main screens, a prototype you can click and a plan for how it will be built. In all three Discovery tiers, it ends with one fixed price for the whole build, paid in stages.
At Gnar, the senior designers and engineers who would build the software write them, during product discovery. With engineers in the room, the plan comes from people who know what it takes to build it. The plan is yours, so your own team or another firm can build from it too.
At Gnar, a product discovery sprint costs $15,000, $20,000 or $30,000, and the prices are public. Gnar Discovery and Design has three tiers: Foundation is two weeks for $15,000, Core is four weeks for $20,000 and Accelerator is six weeks for $30,000. Most clients pick Core. Building the software itself typically costs $150,000 to $300,000 or more.
Yes. At The Gnar Company, a U.S. custom software firm, product discovery ends with one guaranteed price for your build, split into stages. The written requirements say what is in the plan and what is not, so you and Gnar agree on what the price covers before the build starts. When Gnar does the build and the work in the plan runs over, Gnar covers the extra cost. Small agreed changes that fit the plan cost nothing more. Work outside the agreed plan is priced on its own.
Not always. When Gnar’s engineers review your written plan and find it complete, they price the build from it as is. If it needs more work, Gnar’s product discovery works as software requirements consulting, which means the team checks it, fills the gaps, designs the screens and prices the work. In that case, pick the Discovery tier by how much user research and prototyping your plan still needs.
No. Everything Gnar’s product discovery makes is yours: the requirements, the prototype and the build plan. You can take them to your own engineers or to another firm. Most clients move on to custom software development with Gnar, where the same senior team that ran discovery builds the product.
Gnar tells you, plainly. Product discovery at The Gnar Company has its own fixed price, so that answer costs no more than the discovery itself. You still keep the requirements, the prototype and the plan, and you have not paid for a build you do not need.
Yes. Gnar’s product discovery works the same way when new software replaces an old system, like order entry inside an aging ERP, the system that runs orders and inventory. The team talks to the people who do the work today. It writes down what moves to the new software and what stays, maps how the new software connects to the old system, then prices the build. Gnar’s ERP and order management modernization starts with the same fixed‑price discovery.
Gnar’s product discovery is where you find out, before you commit to a build. The team ranks the work with you. Work that costs a lot and adds little can move to a later version, so the first version gets closer to your budget. If it still does not fit, the requirements, prototype and plan are yours. You only paid the discovery’s fixed price.
